Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful. As we’re gearing up to head to Buffalo this week, I’ve been watching the weather as winter storms keep rolling across the north-east. Aside from wondering whether it’s going to impact our travel or not, I’ve also been wondering about what it’s going to mean for our holiday visit with family. Being stuck inside when the weather is gross isn’t fun for anyone, especially young children.

10 Fun Snow Day Activities For Kids

Send them on an Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Get creative with it! Maybe they have to bring you something red from every room in the house. Or find multiples, i.e. 1 doll, 2 cars, 3 rolls of toilet paper. Play with sizes, shapes, colors and counting.

Build a Blanket Fort

Is there anything better than snuggling down on a bed of pillows under a pile of blankets and passing a chilly afternoon with holiday movies?

Host an Indoor Picnic in the Living Room

Get the kids in the kitchen to make up some yummy finger foods. Make it fun by cutting the sandwiches into tea sized triangles or try some our bento box ideas like these easier than you think to make Panda Onigiri and have a picnic in the living room. (Bonus points if it takes place under a blanket fort.)

Create Snowman Marshmallows

Make the snowman’s body by placing 3 jumbo marshmallows on a plate. Add chocolate chips for eyes, buttons and nose. Microwave for 7 seconds and then attach small pretzel sticks for arms. Watch the snowman “melt” as the kids gobble up their treat.

Play with Beads

Beads today are certainly not what they used to be when I was a kid, especially products as unique as Beados by Moose Toys. No longer are beads relegated to necklace strings. Now kids can create their own unique characters and designs as easy as 1-2-3! Kids simply choose their template (or make something up on their own), add the beads and spray them with water. Seriously, just water. No heat, no glue and no mess. Once dry, the beads are fused together and kids can place their designs in the enclosed display stands and use the connectable play pads and scene cards to create a Beados world of their own.

While it’s always fun to let your imagination run wild, sometimes it’s equally as entertaining to create around a theme. For instance, kids can create their favorite sweet designs on a candy cart with the Beados Scoop ‘n’ Mix playset

Create a Photo Booth

Hang up an old sheet and decorate with markers, glitter, boas – whatever you can get your hands on. Use your smartphone to create a selfie station for the kids.

Play Sockball

Can’t get outside to shoot some hoops? Arrange laundry baskets, buckets, whatever you can get your hands on, in the middle of the living room floor. Roll up socks into balls (works best if they’re paired) and create a game out of it!

Bring the Snowflakes Inside

…Sort of. Use coffee filters to create snowflakes. Fold into halves and quarters then cut small shapes along the folded lines.

Have a Holiday Movie Marathon

There are so many great options to choose from: A Christmas Movie, all of the Santa Clause Movies, Elf, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas are all Holiday Movie favorites in our house.

Turn Your Floor Into Car City

Do kids who don’t love cars even exist? Use masking tape on the carpet to create city streets for their toy cars. Tape down sheets of paper to serve as parks and buildings.
