Our home and life is essentially fueled by Verizon, whether it be awesome 4G LTE coverage on all our mobile devices worldwide, or blazing fast Verizon FiOS internet and TV service. While most people with regular cable providers strictly use their service at home, I love that I can take my Verizon FiOS service with me virtually wherever I go via the Verizon FiOS Mobile App (iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire). According to my Delta Skymiles account, I’ve flown 100,236 miles this year so odds are that I am away from home more than I am physically at home – so here are some clever ways I’ve used Verizon FiOS on the go.
Stream live TV
Last year Verizon added the ability to stream live TV to other devices within your household via the Verizon FiOS Mobile App. Not only is this a cool feature for when everyone wants to watch something different, but this has saved us money by NOT having to buy a TV for our son’s bedroom. Since he already has a tablet, he can watch live TV on it as well as view any On Demand shows! No second cable box needed, no installation and no having to buy another TV.
I know, I know – this is supposed to be about using FiOS outside the home – and it is. While you used to have to be on your home network to take full advantage of this feature, now you can watch several stations on the go now too. It’s like taking your TV set with you to the dentist or car wash.
Download and watch anywhere!
I have been waiting for this feature for what seems like forever and I’ve noticed that it is slowly rolling out. You can now download shows and movies to your device and take it with you to watch whenever, with no internet connection needed. It used to be that Ben would pre-plan for long trips by buying or renting a movie on his iPad but those days are long gone. We now just browse through STARZ and Encore and load up our devices with shows and movies for free.
This is actually one of my favorite ways to motivate myself to get to the gym every day. I’ve been downloading and watching the The White Queen series while running on the treadmill, it makes an hour fly by!
Play tricks on family members
You can control your cable box from anywhere using the app. As such, I love switching the TV to something like The Wiggles when I know Ben is watching a football game. Another fun one to do when you are on the other side of the world (and thus awake when they are sleeping) is to look at the guide and put the cable box to an ultra scary movie, then turn the TV on at 3am and turn up the volume. See if you can convince your hubby there is a ghost in the house!
Free Wi-Fi
When you have Verizon FiOS at home it also means you also have access to thousands of Verizon Hotspots too! Hello free Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and restaurants (ahem – STARBUCKS!). When some hotels charge up to $15 per day per device, this is a welcome bonus to have access to.
Program your DVR
I rarely watch TV when I am at home, regular TV that is. We’ll throw on a movie some evenings or I’ll catch up on my favorite HBO or SHO series, but regular, day to day TV isn’t on my busy schedule. Thing is, when I travel I may come across ads for upcoming shows or a movie and it’s so convenient to be able to immediately schedule my DVR to record them – no matter where I am!
You can get the app for iOS, Android, or Kindle Fire.
Even though I am a Verizon #LifeonFiOS Ambassador and I have received product or services for this post, they have not influenced what I’ve said. All opinions and thoughts are 100% honest and mine, all mine.
This would be a great app to have. I hate when i am not at home and i remember i did not set the dvr. I would love to play tricks on my kids .
I would for sure use it for the wifi. Our wifi is down a lot at my office (not at home) and it’s annoying.
I have Verizon FiOS and didn’t realize I could do all that….This is great to know that I can take it on the go!
This is a neat service! I would enjoy being able to control the DVR when I am out!
I don’t have Verizon – it looks like a good company. I will check into it when my contact expires.
