Have you made your list of New Year’s Resolutions yet? Are they the same ones you make every year? Maybe this year you could resolve to work towards something other than the vague and generic self-improving goals that are usually abandoned by February. What if this year you made one small resolution to help others? What if that resolution had the power to change the lives of women around the world and maybe even change your life? Would you consider it?
We have become a nation of self-involved, overworked, exhausted, let’s have it all-ers. Somewhere along the way we became obsessed with the idea of perfection, and in our digital age, we only have to seem perfect on the outside. What happened to living deep meaningful lives? When did it become more important to capture a flawless profile picture than capture that moment of natural happiness, flaws and all? When I look at my son, I keep thinking about what I want to pass on to him. When I’m gone, what legacy will I have left to be remembered by? I want him to see that this is a huge world full of adventure, but more importantly, it is filled with all kinds of people. I want him to understand that life is about sharing in our humanity. As John Donne once said, no man is an island. We are all connected, and life is about living, learning, and sharing, not a competition about who can have more.
It can be easy to forget about the less fortunate when we are divided by oceans, but there are people right in our backyard that need help. What if we were able to give these people the resources they need to rebuild their lives? What if we could even help those that live across oceans that we have never traveled? This year, I am working towards a new kind of goal, and I am asking you to join in the movement.
If you want to resolve to help others this year, please consider buying the 100 Good Deeds Bracelet. Just by purchasing this unique bracelet you are helping women around the world, and when you wear it, this beautiful bracelet becomes a daily reminder to do good for others.
Mary Fisher designed the 100 Good Deeds Bracelet based on the idea from Thomas Morgan. Morgan is a filmmaker and a father that played a game called the 100 Good Deeds with his family. They would work together to perform good deeds for others. The good deeds only counted if they went out of their way to help someone and the deed remained anonymous. When author, artist, and advocate, Mary Fisher heard about this idea, she knew she could turn it into a project to help women all over the world. Having dedicated her life to helping women in developing countries, Mary Fisher jumpstarted this movement knowing it would forever change the lives of struggling women.
Women from Uganda, Zambia, South Africa, Rwanda, Haiti, Bali, India, and even the U.S., create these one of a kind, special bracelets through a non-profit organization that provides educational and economic opportunities for women all over the world. The bracelets they create have 100 beads, and each time the wearer performs a good deed (remember- the good deed only counts if you went out of your way and it remains anonymous), they move the ring one bead closer to the button.
The purchase of the 100 Good Deeds bracelet is providing work for women all over the world, and by wearing the bracelet and participating in this movement, you will be changing lives around you and even your own. When your outlook becomes about helping others, your whole life will change. If we each dedicate ourselves to this one small resolution, we can help the women of the world. There is so much love, generosity, and wealth in our own lives, this year share just a little of your own to make this world a better place.
This movement is empowering women, their families, and people across the world. Many of the women that create these bracelets are HIV positive, and all of them are vulnerable to the socio-economic difficulties of poverty. However, with this single idea, they are creating something beautiful to return to the world, and in exchange, they receive compensation that allows them financial independence. All proceeds are reinvested into the profit to give more women training and resources to take control of their lives. They now have the chance to make a better life all while creating the vehicle through which millions of good deeds will be performed. Visit the website and you can see the women that create this bracelets.
The 100 Good Deed Bracelets come in many different colors, and there also many other bracelets and jewelry options that are created by these women. Instead of buying mass produced jewelry, buy one of these unique bracelets with a story and help change the world.
This movement has become number one on my list of New Year’s Resolutions. I have purchased my very own 100 Good Deeds bracelet, and I am going to get started doing one good deed a day. In order to spread this movement further, I will also purchase these bracelets for friends and family for birthdays and the like and encourage them to share in this movement. Maybe if we all focused more on making ourselves beautiful on the inside, we would be more satisfied with our lives and find it unnecessary to create the illusion of perfection on the outside.
Please join me in this movement. We can change this world one person, one bracelet, one good deed at a time.
