What we do today will affect our tomorrow. It’s a fact of life. For many 20 somethings, the thought off anti-wrinkle measures and skin care routines beyond face wash are still a good decade away. But the truth is that the way we take care of our skin in our 20s has more influence than the way we start treating in our 30s and 40s. Our lifestyle, diet, skin care routines and even where we live now all play a part in the way our skin will look in the future. To shed some light on factors that affect skin aging, RoC® Skincare and Sperling’s Best Places performed a meta-analysis, to analyze the way lifestyle, occupational and environmental factors found in major cities today would play a part in the risk for skin damage and premature aging by the year 2040.
“Our skin is a canvas that reveals a lifetime of environmental influences, behavioral choices and genetics,” said architect and urban futurist Dr. Cindy Frewen.
Each metropolitan area in the study received points for each of the criteria based on their relation to the other metropolitan area’s scores in that data category, and category scores were weighted and aggregated to determine an overall “Wrinkle Index” score to rank the top U.S. metro areas. The third annual RoC® Wrinkle Ranking predicts that in the year 2040, Philadelphia will reign #1 as the most wrinkle-prone city in America, thanks to high-stress levels, more airborne pollution, lengthy commute times and higher than average smoking rates. Coming in at #50, San Jose will claim the least wrinkle-prone title in 2040, due to its shorter commute time, smaller population size and an anticipated shift toward a wetter climate.
I was happy to see that my current hometown of Jacksonville, Florida came in at #48 putting it in third place for least wrinkle-prone city in 2040. But even if you’re living in #1 Philadelphia, #8 New York or even #25 Los Angeles there’s no reason to pack your bags and hit the road. Remember, this study took in stress levels, cigarette smoke, and lack of precipitation (and thus drier skin) among other factors in order to reach these scores. So while you might not be able to control your cities pollution levels (although you can go a long way toward advocating for it) or lengthy commute times, there are things you can control even if you live in the wrinkliest city in America.
Skin Care Tips for Prevent Deep Wrinkles
-
Moisturize
In combination with cleansing, moisturizing is one of the most important factors in helping your skin retain its youthfulness. Dry skin leads to fine lines and wrinkles (ack!), and it’s also the culprit behind losing the elasticity we all enjoy in our youth.
-
Prevent Sun Damage
Use a moisturizer with SPF, make it a part of your daily routine especially if you live in states like Texas, California or Florida. You know, those notoriously sunny climates we adore.
-
Exfoliate
Slough away dry skin and dirt so your moisturizer and SPF can do its work on your bests skin. No need to get carried away, just exfoliate once or twice a week. Otherwise, you may experience rough patches, red skin and irritation.
-
Reduce Stress
So much of our body is about total balance. So while it may seem trivial even stress can affect our skin. Taking up yoga, exercise or meditation are great ways to reduce stress and stay in shape. Both important factors in keeping our skin healthy and wrinkle free.

Begin Using Retinol NOW
Whether your 26 or 36 the time to start using wrinkle-fighting skincare products is now. I recently started using RoC® Retinol Correxion Skincare line including Deep Wrinkle Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30 and RoC® Eye Cream. The Retinol Correxion Line utilizes retinol, the “gold standard” in anti-aging skin care ingredients. Both of which are completely new to my skincare routine. As odd as it may seem one of the first things I noticed about the products was the smell. They have this wonderful clean smell. It applied to my skin like whipped satin and completely absorbed without feeling heavy or greasy. I’ve never been able to tolerate anything “heavy” on my face, including makeup, so this was a huge plus. Overall, they’re an easy part of my beauty routine that goes a long way toward warding off wrinkles without a lot of effort. A no brainer really, especially when you consider all of the benefits of Retinol.
You can purchase RoC® Skincare Products at Target and CVS.
To shine a light on how these factors affect skin aging, RoC® Skincare has again partnered with independent research firm Sperling’s Best Places for the 2016 RoC® Wrinkle Ranking: a city by city look at the metropolitan areas’ risk for skin damage and premature aging by the year 2040.
I live in an urban area — more wrinkles for me. :< . Good point about the stress — I need to reduce that in my life. Great tips!
