One night, a few days after we put an offer on our first house, a fixer-upper, my husband and I laid in bed watching HGTV late into the night. We talked of load bearing walls, the potential of ripping up the old carpet to find hardwood flooring underneath (salvageable of course) and kitchen remodels – as if we had any idea what we were really getting ourselves into. It wasn’t long until the stars were ripped from our eyes like nails from a 2×4 as we quickly learned that home renovations were far beyond our skill set. We’ve moved on from our fixer up and traded it in for a life in the military. I thought this meant my days of playing contractor were over but I couldn’t have been more wrong. By the time we had made our second military move, I had binged two seasons of Fixer Upper and I was ready to tear into my walls in the hopes that I might find shiplap hidden beneath the drywall.
It turns out I wasn’t the only military spouse committed to turning color-by-number military housing into a unique sanctuary reflective of our family. Facebook is teaming with military spouse groups dedicated to discussing our DIY projects, design inspiration, dream kitchens and our love for all things Rae Dunn and Joanna Gaines. Of all the projects we show off in the groups, it’s no surprise that the topic of kitchens, and what to do with them remained most popular. The kitchen is the both the heart of the home and the utilitarian room in the house. With such a reflective area of your home, it really comes down to the small details as much as the overall aesthetic when making design choices. So it had me wondering what upcoming kitchen trends 2017 had to offer.
Six Kitchen Design Trends We Love for 2017
Gray is the New White
Wondering what color to paint your cabinets? Well, Gray is the new white. Gray undertones throughout a kitchen can timeless and it matches well with most paint colors. By using grays that have a hint of colors like green or blue, it also makes it easy to tie your newly remodeled kitchen into other areas of your home. Gray also pairs well with almost any flooring or countertop choice including both light and dark woods.
Functional Storage
No longer is it enough to have a cabinet and drawer for everything. In a society where we focus on smart objects, small spaces, and smart design concepts homeowners want their space to be as efficient as possible and laid out in a way that allowed them to work smarter, not harder. From cabinets that offer roll-out spice racks, custom pan holders, open weave baskets for vegetable storage and hinged under sink storage it’s easy to maximize space and increase efficiency in the kitchen. Even your refrigerator can be smarter and better organized, as proven by the LG InstaView Door-In-Door refrigerator. It offers a sleek glass panel that allows you to see inside the easy access door without letting the cold air out. Simply knock twice on the glass to illuminate the contents within.
Black Stainless Steel
When it comes to kitchen design, the smallest details can affect the look of your entire space. For a long time, if you wanted luxury appliances than stainless steel was about your only option but then manufacturers wisened up and started offering Black Stainless Steel Appliances. They’re gorgeous in a variety of kitchen designs including modern, black and white scale, high contrast, and yes even gray. The fact that the color pairs so well with current design trends and it’s easy to see why it’s becoming so popular. The LG Black Stainless Steel Series has satin-smooth, warm and sophisticated finish that is truly drool-worthy. Just check out their Self-Cleaning Slide-In Electric Convection Range. Plus, the entire line is ENERGY STAR® qualified which saves you money in the long run and if we know anything about kitchen remodels it’s that every penny counts.

Contrasting Colors
In recent years, the trend has been to white wash and distress everything. The trend is popular because it instantly opens and brightens a space. However, if done properly, this same concept can be done with contrasting colors. Pairing white cabinets with dark counter tops (and vice versa) and painting parts of a table and chairs white with contrasting natural wood tones stained dark can achieve this look. The key is balance.
Timeless Farmhouse Style
Farmhouse decor and style has been on trend for a few seasons but the style has actually been around a lot longer thanks to its timeless appeal. It’s also helpful that farmhouse style pairs so well with other trends happening like contrasting colors, gray color schemes, and apron-front sinks. This trend also works well because it’s easy to update older cabinets with a bit of paint and new hardware to achieve the look.
Quartz Worktops
It wasn’t that long ago that granite was the go to countertop material choice for dream kitchen remodeling projects but recently there has been a shift to explore other options due to maintenance requirements and design aesthetic. At the top of that list is quartz. It runs a bit more expensive than granite but it doesn’t require the upkeep of granite and offers more design options. Plus, it’s becoming more affordable as contractors develop the way to create composite surfaces using quartz and resin.
