How far in advance can I make fruit skewers?
Can I make fruit skewers ahead of time? Yes, you can! If you want to save time on the day of your party, you can make these as much as 24 hours ahead of time.
You’ll want to store them chilled in the refrigerator, lying flat and covered.
What should I do with the extra watermelon scraps?
After using your cookie cutter to cut out perfect star shaped watermelon pieces for the top of the sticks, you’ll have a bunch of watermelon scraps left over. Some will be in all sorts of odd sizes and shapes, and some will still be on the rind.
If you haven’t already eaten up the extras while your kids were busy putting the fruit on sticks, here are some ideas on what to do with the extra scraps.
- make a traditional fruit salad
- make a watermelon smoothie
- have a watermelon eating contest with the bits left on the rinds
How do you display fruit skewers?
There are a variety of ways you can display fruit sticks, it really depends on how fancy you want to get. To keep it simple, I like to stand them up in a sturdy small vase or glass.
You can place some water, sand, pebbles or marbles in the bottom to help with balance and keep the sticks arranged how you want them.
You can also just fan them out laying flat on a large plate.
How can I make these red, white AND blue?
If you want a snack that is a little more substantial or if you just want to complete the color scheme by adding in white, you could easily slide on some mozzarella pearls. The mellow flavor of mozzarella cheese pairs really nicely with both blueberries and watermelon.
You could also substitute in cherries, strawberries, blackberries or raspberries!
Stars and Stripes Fruit Sticks Recipe
Ingredients
1 watermelon, large enough for your star-shaped cookie cutters
1 package Blueberries
Wilton Cake Pop Sticks (or you could also use metal or wood skewers)
Star Shaped Cookie Cutter
Directions
Wash the blueberries and cut the watermelon into slices that are about ¾ of an inch thick.
Don’t go much thinner because they may not stay on the sticks.
Use the star-shaped cookie cutter for perfectly easy star shapes.
Add a few blueberries to one end of the stick and then slide the stick into one of the corners for the stars.
Aiming for the middle so it will be balanced and stay in place, try to put the stick at least a 1/3 of the way into the melon.
Store chilled in the refrigerator, lying flat and covered.
Optional: If you’d like to add a refreshing kick try adding my traditional fruit salad secret sauce – drizzle with a mixture of honey, lime juice and minced mint leaves.
Stand them up in a sturdy small vase or lay flat on a plate when ready to serve.
