Whether we’re packing for a purpose or taking trips that give back, Surf and Sunshine loves social good platforms. We believe that todays connected world is capable leveraging the new resources we have like technology, e-commerce and social media to help create a better world. It can be as simple as packing a suitcase of learning supplies on our next travel adventure or stopping to buy handmade goods directly from the locals.
There are also a number of companies we enjoy partnering with that are leading their own social good crusades. One of our favorites is bringing humanitarian efforts to communities in Africa. Another is working to clean up SoCal’s coast while educating our children.

We recently had the opportunity to learn about another great business that is working to incorporate social good throughout every facet of their ideology. Bears for Humanity is a US based company with a mission to provide a sustainable way to give bears to children in need. For every bear sold, they donate a bear to a needy child through their wide network of giving partners.
Recently they partnered with California PAL to donate 1,000 Bears to the children that were affected by the Lake Country fires. Over 1,000 homes were burned to the ground and hundreds of families were living in make-shift camps, at the local school and fair grounds. Hundreds of children didn’t know where they were going to live day to day. In the face of impending life threatening danger, many of these families left their homes with just the clothes on their back, leaving behind all their possessions only to be destroyed by the fires.
A child in such a position is desperately in need of a comfort item. Something to call their own when they have nothing left. The bears are adorable, they come in all shapes, sizes and color for every boy and girl. There are even a variety of Animal Pal friends to choose from.
But the social good doesn’t end with the giving of bears. Bears for Humanity works to incorporate social good from top to bottom. From farm to fulfillment, their plush toys are made using only 100% GOTS Certified Organic materials and Global Fair Trade practices, while employing at-risk women from Welfare-to-Work programs right here in the United States.
Here’s what this really means:
- They buy directly from co-op organic farmers to ensure Fair Trade practices and cost.
- Their organic cotton produces 94% less greenhouse gases, and the native vegetation nurtures soil, resulting in less water usage.
- The stuffing is made from recycled bottles and caps and packaged using recycled boxes.
- Their facility employs at-risk women from Welfare-to-Work programs to hand sew, stuff and brush the toys.
- The bears are constructed in the USA.
