As my due date quickly approaches, I find myself basking in the love and support I have felt during both my first and now my last pregnancy.
With nesting in full force just 5 weeks from my due date, I’m working to finish the last details on the nursery and in doing so I’ve been revisiting a number of the gifts I have received from family and friends.
It got me thinking about the most meaningful baby shower gifts I had received over the course of two pregnancies so I wanted to share a few ideas with you for the new baby shower you attend.
5 Meaningful Baby Shower Gifts
Personalized or Handmade Gifts
I can still tell you who made which quilt in our home, the crafty person behind the custom scrapbook, who crocheted the stuffed giraffe my daughter loves and who gave her the embroidered clothing that I loved to put her in.
There are so many tutorials on DIY Baby Shower Gifts out there for crafty people and if you aren’t crafty yourself there are hoards of crafty people on Etsy creating really cute baby shower gifts like baby blankets and loveys.
Another great idea? A keepsake chest. My keepsake chest is a few decades old and still holds items from mine and my husband’s childhood and now our children’s as well.

Your Favorite Books
I still love it when people gift my children books but I remember one book in particular that I received from an honorary aunt of mine shortly after my first child was born, Someday by Alison McGhee.
I remember the tears streaming down my face as I read the last page. It’s a book that describes motherhood so eloquently, that captures its essence so perfectly.
I now purchase this book for everyone I know that’s expecting and put a short message from me at the front.
Gift Cards
Now wait a minute, I know what you’re thinking but hear me out. I’m not talking about any old gift cards. Specifically photo gift cards – whether they’re for a photography session with a local family photographer for those precious newborn sessions or gift card to photo printing websites.
In today’s digital age, more and more of our photos end up online instead of in photo books or on the wall.

As someone who loves photography, I’m always urging people to get professionally photos taken of their family regularly and to get their photos printed, especially moms. I promise you, this is an investment you’ll never regret making.
Personally, I hoard Shutterfly gift cards. I love turning our photos into canvas prints, photo books and keepsakes like key chains or ornaments.
Invest in their Future
One of the most meaningful gifts you can give a new child, and their parents, is an investment into their future.
Programs like ScholarShare make it easy, convenient and safe for anyone to contribute to a child’s college fund. This also sets itself up to be the perfect birthday or holiday gift each year.
Gifts that take care of Mom
With my first pregnancy I received to glorious “pamper me” baskets filled with beauty, bath and health supplies. Even though it was five years ago I can still tell you the contents of those baskets and who they were from because I enjoyed them so much.
This pregnancy, whenever family members asked what they could do for me specifically I let family know I wouldn’t mind being treated to massage (pregnancy and labor are hard on your back!) or even cleaning services once the baby is born.
You will find that both services often have packages just for mom-to-be or new moms.
No baby showers in the foreseeable future that I know of at least. Love those stuffed animals and what a great idea to make up a basket for the Mom so she can pamper herself.
I am used to giving baby things or essentials when I’m invited to a baby shower. I think these are great suggestions.
That is very smart idea, I know we need to be practical so this is really nice gift idea for baby shower, I agree what you said that great gift is an invesment in their future like scholar share.
These are really cute in baby shower, I love your idea about the scholar share, yes you’re right.
I always get diapers for new moms. I always appreciated them when I was pregnant, too :)
