As the traditional flower of China and the 12th wedding anniversary flower, peonies are known as the flower of riches and honor. Their full, rounded blooms embody beauty and romance. They’re an omen of good fortune and a happy, prosperous marraige. It’s no wonder brides love to turn them into bridal bouquets.
According to greek methology, it’s believed that Peony is named after Paeon, a healing deity who healed Hades’ and Ares’ wounds. It’s claimed that Paeon was a student of Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing. When Paeon was instructed by Leto (goddess of fertillity) to secure a magical root growing on Mount Olympus that would soothe the pain of women in childbirth Asclepius became jealous and threatened to kill his pupil.
Paeon was saved by Zues when he was turned into the peony flower. This mythology finds its base in ancient times when peony seeds were actually used by pregnant women.
