It’s not every day you get the opportunity to witness the birth of a new sporting event. However, this weekend the beautiful Sherwood Country Club in Lake Sherwood, CA, hosted the inaugural PowerShares QQQ Championship, and I was lucky enough to be invited to attend by #FrontierSoCal. The PowerShares QQQ Championship is the newest tournament on the PGA Tour of Champions, and is the first of three Charles Schwab Cup Playoff events. It features a 72 player field competing for a $2 million purse in a three day, 54 hole event.
Sherwood Country Club was the ideal location for the brand new golf tournament. The course, with its rolling hills and picturesque waterfalls, provided the perfect backdrop for the competition. Impressive mansions dotted the edges of the course, and the clubhouse was as elegant as they come.
Frontier Communications was a proud partner of the tournament and perhaps the most notable of their contributions was the Patriot’s Patio – a covered space dedicated solely to military personnel both past and present. Located on the green of the 10th hole, the enclosure offered a superb view of the action while providing a respite from the rain. Needless to say, it was a very popular hangout for all those who have served or are currently serving.
The big excitement surrounding the tournament was the return of Fred Couples, as he has missed a good portion of the year due to a back injury. The week of the tournament, Fred announced that he would be participating in the PowerShares QQQ Championship, and ticket sales soared. I was fortunate enough to arrive on Sunday, right when Couples was teeing off for the day. He let the ball rip on the monster par 5, and was off to a good start.
It would not prove to be his day, however. Couples, along with everyone else competing on Sunday, had to also battle the elements. Rain was persistent most of the day, which made a challenging course even more difficult. Excellent golfers such as John Daly and Stephen Ames all struggled to find their footing in Sunday’s competition and in the end, it was Tom Pernice Jr. who took home the title of the inaugural PowerShares QQQ Championship.

I am very weak when it comes to understanding the rules of golf. It is really a nice game and a favorite sport of many wealthy people, but somehow I feel it lacks the thrilling effect; typical, soccer fan :D.
